ANA Statement on Vermont Senate Upholding Veto of H. 121
Jun 18, 2024 — Chris Oswald, the ANA's EVP, Head of Law, Ethics, and Government Relations issued the below statement following the Vermont Senate's failure to override Governor Phil Scott's veto of their proposed comprehensive privacy law, H. 121.
"The Senate's vote to uphold Governor Scott's veto on H.121 was a victory for Vermont consumers, advertisers, nonprofits, and small businesses. We commend the Senate for blocking the override of a deeply flawed privacy bill that would have caused significant consumer harm, regulatory confusion, frivolous litigation, and economic injury to Vermont businesses. As Governor Scott noted in his veto message, the bill's proposed Private Right of Action would have set a new low for the nation, triggering a flood of risky and expensive lawsuits from out-of-state lawyers, driving up costs for Vermont residents and businesses."
