Portrait of the Satan..

Astaroth is one of the Seven Satans of hell in Angel Sanctuary. His deadly sin is Sloth, and he is also known as the Marquis of Fear. Formerly a member of Thrones, he is a fallen angel like 5 of the other Seven Satans.

Astaroth is combined of two people, Astarte, the sister, and Astoreth, her twin brother. (Not sure about spellings.) When God was trying to create the legendary Holy Hermit Adam Kadmon (Serafita), He placed Astarte's mind into Astoreth's body as part of the experiment. Serafita was the only successful one, and Astaroth was one of the failures because the two minds were not able to coexist in one body. Both Astoreth's and Astarte's mental states slowly degraded: Astoreth became cruel, insane, and craves blood whereas Astarte also goes insane and craves to conceive when she is unable to do so.

After falling from heaven, Lucifer uses his powers to separate them by altering their consciousnesses between Astaroth's body and a two-headed snake (one black, one white). When the body is female (Astarte), Astoreth's mind and soul are sealed inside a black snake, and when the body is male (Astoreth), Astarte's mind and soul are sealed are inside a white snake.

In hell, Astoreth enjoys watching victims get lost in his maze and then goes in for the kill. Astarte, on the other hand, swallows children and believes herself to be pregnant, but her brother kills her "baby" each time he reclaims the body.

When Kurai encounters Astaroth, Astarte is pregnant and receives Kurai kindly. When she senses that her brother is approaching, she hides Kurai in a chest to save her from her brother's bloodthirst. Since Kurai cannot see, she only hears Astarte accuse Astoreth of killing her "baby" again. Kurai, unable to bear the thought of such cruelty, emerges and is captured by Astoreth. He reveals information about Madhatter (Belial) then tries to kill her afterwards. However, Astarte reclaims the body in time and explains to Kurai that she and her brother have to share the same body, which drove Astoreth insane and cruel, believing that she was the cause of his suffering. When Kurai asks about her baby, Astarte reveals that she cannot conceive and tries to swallow Kurai to make up for her lost baby. Luckily, for Kurai, Prince Abaddon (one of Lucifer's children) bursts into the room to save her and kills Astarte. In her last efforts, she dies in the form of a white snake, thus restores Astoreth into his original body. Astoreth (now fully Astaroth) is upset but mourns briefly because Madhatter drops off an invitation to Lucifer's 999th wedding.

:: My Rant ::

I love Astaroth.. I think he (including she)'s strikingly beautiful and cool. I sympathize them as I do for a lot of the characters in Angel Sanctuary. Pity a few... Anyway, I like the deadly sin he and she represent. Click here to read about sloth.
